Our Ground- and Nature-Based Therapeutic Philosophy

At Temekunga Farms, we believe that meaningful healing and personal growth occur through intentional, ground-based interactions between people and horses in a natural environment. Our evidence-informed, trauma-informed, nature- and horse-centered approach recognizes horses as active co-facilitators in the therapeutic process while prioritizing the physical and emotional well-being of both our clients and our equine partners.

An Evidence-Based Approach to Equine-Assisted Therapy

At Temekunga Farms, all equine-assisted services are conducted exclusively through ground-based (no riding) interactions. This approach is intentional and is supported by current research in equine-assisted services, which demonstrates that many of the therapeutic benefits associated with human–horse interactions, including improvements in emotional regulation, mindfulness, self-awareness, communication, confidence, social skills, and stress reduction, are achieved by the relational aspect of working with horses. Ground-based activities such as grooming, leading, liberty work, obstacle courses, observation, and structured experiential exercises foster meaningful opportunities for learning while emphasizing the therapeutic relationship between the participant and the horse.

Horses As Therapeutic Co-Facilitators

Our horses are not viewed as treatment tools but as active co-facilitators in the therapeutic process. Through their natural sensitivity to human body language, emotional states, and behavioral patterns, horses provide immediate, authentic, and nonjudgmental feedback that promotes self-awareness, emotional regulation, and interpersonal growth. This reciprocal interaction is central to our therapeutic philosophy and allows participants to develop insight and practice new skills within a safe and supportive environment.

A Commitment to Equine Welfare

Ground-based services also prioritize the welfare of our equine partners. Consistent with contemporary equine welfare principles, this model allows horses to participate voluntarily in interactions that are physically less demanding than mounted work while still providing meaningful engagement, environmental enrichment, and opportunities for positive human–animal relationships. By focusing on ground-based activities, we reduce physical strain on the horses and create conditions that support their long-term physical health, emotional well-being, and ability to serve as effective co-facilitators. This reflects our commitment to a trauma-informed, client-centered, and horse-centered approach in which the well-being of both humans and horses is fundamental to the therapeutic process.

Our Perspective on Mounted Equine Interventions

At the same time, we recognize and respect the substantial body of scientific evidence supporting mounted equine interventions, including hippotherapy and adaptive (therapeutic) riding, for individuals with specific physical, neuromotor, and developmental needs. These specialized services have been shown to improve balance, postural control, gait, muscle strength, coordination, core stability, and functional mobility, while also providing cognitive, emotional, and social benefits when delivered by appropriately trained professionals.

Because these interventions require specialized training, equipment, and clinical expertise, they fall outside the scope of services offered at Temekunga Farms. When a participant's goals are better served through mounted equine therapy or adaptive riding, we are pleased to collaborate with families and healthcare providers by referring them to reputable hippotherapy and adaptive riding programs in our community. We believe that matching each individual with the most appropriate equine-assisted service is essential to achieving the best possible therapeutic outcomes.

A Therapeutic Environment Inspired by Nature

Nestled in the foothills of Temecula Valley, Temekunga Farms offers far more than a horse facility, it is a naturally enriched therapeutic environment where the healing power of horses is complemented by the restorative qualities of nature. Set against the picturesque backdrop of our organic vineyard and surrounded by rolling hills and mountain vistas, the farm invites participants to slow down, reconnect, and engage all of their senses. Clients have told us that the drive to our farm alone is therapeutic.

The fragrance of native sagebrush, the ancient oak trees, and the sights and sounds of farm animals and abundant wildlife, including hawks, songbirds, hummingbirds, deer, coyotes, bobcats, rabbits and other creatures, create an immersive setting that promotes learning, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and a sense of calm. The land also honors the rich cultural heritage of the Temecula Valley's Native American peoples, reflecting a longstanding connection between humans, animals, and the natural world.

Research has consistently shown that time spent in nature can reduce stress, restore attention, enhance emotional well-being, and support overall health. At Temekunga Farms, the horses, the vineyard, the surrounding landscape, and the rhythms of nature come together to create a peaceful sanctuary where healing, learning, and personal growth can flourish.
