My First Canter on Vivian: A Journey of Trust and Partnership

Vivian is our 3-year-old Moriesian filly, a beautiful blend of Friesian and Morgan. She came to us when she was just 8 months old. Having been bred and raised by a trainer, she already knew quite a bit for her age: how to quietly stand in cross ties, walk into a trailer, tolerate hoof care, and lead politely. From the beginning, she showed a sweet, curious, and willing disposition. Of course, like any youngster, she had her moments during the “terrible twos,” when she’d suddenly throw a tantrum, kicking or bucking on the lead line just to test her boundaries. She definitely had a little spice in her!

Two months ago, we began the exciting process of starting her under saddle. Unlike most, I didn’t want to send Vivian away for traditional “breaking.” I wanted to be part of every step, to learn alongside her, not just hand her over. I was fortunate to find the most wonderful trainer, Marion, who was willing to work with us. She came once a week to teach us a new concept and left us with homework to practice on our own.

We began slowly. First with a bareback pad, just walking her around until she was comfortable. Then came the surcingle and long reins, and eventually the saddle. Once she understood the feel of the reins and accepted the saddle without concern, it was time for me to climb on.

At first, I simply draped my upper body over her back, letting her feel my weight. She didn’t mind one bit. Then, with Marion standing at her head, I swung my leg over for the very first time. The first few steps felt awkward for both of us as Vivian learned to balance with a rider on top. Step by step, she grew more confident. Soon I was sitting in the saddle while Marion led us. Then came the first trot, first lunge-line ride, and finally, our first rides completely on our own.

Each session, Vivian’s movements became more fluid, her body more supple, and her understanding sharper. She began to respond to lighter aids, turning with grace and confidence.

And then today, we cantered for the very first time. I’d been waiting for this moment, and when I asked, Vivian instantly knew what to do. She picked up the right lead with enthusiasm, and it felt like flying. Her canter was smooth, balanced, and pure joy. My heart could have burst with pride. My “little girl” isn’t so little anymore, she’s nearly 16 hands and will probably end up the tallest horse in our barn!

People often talk about “breaking” a horse when starting them under saddle. But with Vivian, and with Marion’s patient guidance, there was no breaking involved. There was laughter, curiosity, and gentle, consistent steps that built mutual trust and confidence for both of us.

I’m so grateful I chose not to send Vivian away. Learning together, taking our time, and building our relationship one ride at a time has created a lifelong bond, one built on trust, respect, and love.

Just like with everything else in life - walking the walk makes all the difference. The way I feel about Vivian, we will not only walk the walk, we will soon be flying!
